A joint team took a gold medal at the iGEM international synthetic-biology competition in November 2020, for a biosensor detecting Aspergillus fungal infection, which destroys around 40 per cent of rice grains during post-harvest storage in Sri Lanka.
The team was eight undergraduates from the Kumoh National Institute of Technology in Korea working with the academy. The project was called “Save Our Rice Anywhere”.
It won a gold medal. It has not been deployed, and nobody’s harvest depends on it.
